The seventh edition of QuadZilla and the Finger Lakes 350 ultra cycling events were held on July 19-20, 2003. The event drew 35 riders from 11 states and two Canadian provinces. The weather was perfect both days and just a bit cool during the night. More checkpoints with hot food and additional secret checkpoints with snacks afforded the riders one of the best opportunities ever to finish this grueling hillfest. The QuadZilla had 23 finishers while 12 riders opted for some or all of the Finger Lakes 350 route.
Bryan Johnson, age 38, a Commodity Engineering Manager at Teradyne Corporation in Boston, took advantage of the moderate temperatures and bested Keith Krombel's record from last year by turning in a 30:55 time. Bryan hung out all day (and evening) greeting finishers in Ithaca. QuadZilla also saw its first ever Women's Official Finisher, Julie Riplinger. Julie, age 49, a Learning/Communication Designer, is a neophyte ultra rider whose longest ride before QuadZilla was 220 miles. She struggled through some tough moments but finished with an excellent 37:05. Michelle Dulieu also finished officially after just missing the cut-off time last year. Jim Cartwright came all the way from Muncie, Indiana to establish a 65 and over record of 38:35. Just amazing! And Mike Seager kept his QuadZilla streak alive with seven flawless finishes. The next QuadZilla/FL350 is scheduled for July 2006.
